The climate emergency is a humanitarian emergency: YouTube comes into play
We launched the first YouTube live for UNHCR to raise awareness among Gen Z and young Millennials about the impact of the climate crisis on the lives of millions of refugees and displaced people. A new experience in Digital PR for UNHCR that allowed them to achieve significant engagement and fundraising goals. To amplify the buzz, a multi-social campaign was supported, featuring micro-media influencers.
UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, increasingly finds itself intervening in contexts where extreme weather events and their consequences impact the already precarious lives of millions of people fleeing conflicts and violence. In this context, there is a growing need for funding and awareness regarding the consequences of the climate crisis on the lives of refugees and displaced persons. The challenge: to sensitize the younger demographic of potential donors - statistically more sensitive to the issue of climate change - by highlighting how disastrous environmental consequences are compounded by equally severe humanitarian crises
We embarked on an 'onboarding' journey with the creator, science communicator, and climate activist BarbascuraX, aiming to effectively and engagingly reach the younger audience. This led to the idea of the YouTube marathon 'Supermegalive Barba&Friends': 6 hours of entertainment with BarbascuraX and 12 stand-up comedians and famous YouTubers from his network. The entertainment was interspersed with in-depth moments by UNHCR spokespersons, featuring calls to action for donations. The themes of the climate emergency as a humanitarian crisis were preceded by a digital PR campaign involving more than 40 micro, medium, and top influencers aligned with UNHCR's causes.
